About

The Excellent Physician is my ongoing pursuit of living with intention. It is not a claim of achievement, but a vision of an ideal—an aspiration toward arete, the classical concept of excellence rooted in virtue and purpose. We are each given one life, and my aim is to live it deliberately for God’s glory: aligned with right priorities, free of regret, and in faithful pursuit of what God has called me to.

Professionally, I am a board-certified Emergency Physician with a Focused Practice Designation in Emergency Ultrasonography. I completed my undergraduate studies in biology at Cedarville University, attended medical school at Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University, and trained in Emergency Medicine through the Case Western Reserve University/MetroHealth Medical Center/Cleveland Clinic residency program. Following residency, I completed a fellowship in Emergency Ultrasound at MetroHealth.

I currently practice at an academic, urban, Level I trauma center that serves as a regional safety-net hospital.  I work as a faculty physician in the emergency department seeing patients and supervising medical students and residents.  In addition to my practice in the ED, I previously spent nearly a decade as a physician with our hospital’s Life Flight program providing emergency medicine in the air.  I hold an academic appointment as an Associate Professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

My academic focus centers on point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), which I view as one of the most powerful tools available to clinicians for rapid diagnosis, procedural guidance, and improved patient care. I have served in leadership roles as both Ultrasound Fellowship Director and Ultrasound Division Director and I also previously led and oversaw a nurse and paramedic ultrasound-guided IV program, training frontline providers in ultrasound-guided vascular access to improve care in time-sensitive environments.

Though not currently in leadership, I remain actively engaged in advancing POCUS education. I have taught ultrasound in a variety of settings over the years, including bedside scanning, local lecturing and teaching national ultrasound courses. I developed and continue to contribute to our division’s ultrasound-focused YouTube channel, which allows my teaching to reach a global audience of clinicians.

In addition to teaching, I serve on multiple hospital committees focused on POCUS policy development and integration of ultrasound into clinical workflows and information systems. My goal in this work is to facilitate POCUS use across the hospital and to improve POCUS workflows for clinicians.

My most significant roles are not found in medicine or professional titles. I am more importantly a husband and a father of six children. My wife and I are deeply committed to building a family grounded in faith, rooted in truth, and marked by love and adventure.

Together, we are active in our church and seek to cultivate a life that reflects what we believe matters most. I am privileged to serve as the finance director, where I am involved in overseeing the finances, budgeting, and fiscal operations of our church community.

Personally, I enjoy reading, fitness, traveling, investing, and working on projects around our family farm. Whether at home, in the hospital, or through this platform, my goal remains the same: to live—and to help others live—excellently.
